WP Dylan Womer  LP Steve Horlacher

Ryan Dyke sparked the hawks in the second inning with a leadoff double and would later score on an RBI groundout.  That would be all the offense Dylan Womer would need as he limited the Peppers to 4 hits with 6 k’s in a complete game effort.  Only once did Pleasant Gap have a runner reach second base with less than 2 outs as a leadoff double by Trent Fortney would only see him advance as far as third.  Howard would add insurance runs in the 4th and 5th innings paced by another leadoff double this time by Evan Gettig.

Opening Day 2017

With all the threat of rain, we made it through opening day for the Centre County Baseball League.

Coming away with the wins were league champs, Clarence Mounties, and the Howard Hawks.

Lemont at Mounties

The Clarence Mounties scored 3 runs off of Lemont starter Clint Hicks in the 1st inning, which would be all they would need to cruise to a 4-0 win at Clarence in the opener. In the 1st, John Schall hit a 2 out RBI double, and Ryan Guenot added a 2 RBI single to make the score 3-0. In the bottom of the 5th, Brian Kochik added a solo homer to LF that hit the top of the wall and skipped into the creek to make the score 4-0. Mountie pitcher Ryan MacNamara picked up the complete game win, striking out 9. Clarence is back in action at home on Tuesday vs. Pleasant Gap, while Lemont hosts PO. Clarence is 1-0 on the season, while Lemont falls to 0-1. Mountie Bryce Greene goes 2-4 at the plate, setting the CCBL record for hitting streak at 23 games, dating back to 2016.

Coyotes at Howard

Evan Getting started off fast with a single off Coyotes pitcher Andrew Stover. Dan Cole promptly brought him in to get the Hawks the lead in the first inning. The Hawks put together another offensive assualt in the sixth, starting with a walk by Kyle Womer, who was eventually brought in on a double by Dyke. Hawks pitcher, Brian Pelka, who pitched a complete game, deftly handled the Coyotes with 7Ks. Not bad at all…

So Long — Not Goodbye

An Open Letter from Drew Bryan

Hi all,Pooh-01

It is with mixed feelings that I am emailing you guys today about my involvement with the Spike Island Pirates and the CCBL. I am relieving myself of my duties as manager of the team and will not play in any more games this season, including playoffs. As some of you know, I moved to Blacksburg, VA and have a full time job down here as well as coaching the JV baseball team at Blacksburg High School.

Before this season, I thought I was going to be home for the summer and would be able to manage and play again, but it has become unrealistic after I got a full-time job and cannot be home besides weekends since I live 6 hours away. I was able to play in two games this season and had the chance to play in more since I was home on vacation this past week but I decided that I needed to spend some time with my family instead of playing. In this case, I won’t get enough games in to make the playoff deadline of four games. Managing the team from a couple states away has been difficult to say the least and has become too much for me to handle. So I decided to step down and allow someone else to take control.

With that being said, Brandon Quay will be taking over for me as temporary manager of the Spike Island Pirates for the rest of the regular season and playoffs. His cell phone number is 814-571-7524. His email is bzq102@gmail.com. Please contact him for anything you need regarding Spike Island for the rest of the season.

I wanted to personally thank all of you for the last two seasons that I was home. I’ll never forget the finals two years ago vs. Clarence (even though we were swept by a great team!) because every game was close and proceed a lot of excitement. I’ll also never forget the end of last season because of my roster error. It was something that I was extremely embarrassed about because I felt like I let not only myself and our players down, but also Howard and the league because it became a distraction that I caused by my own honest mistake. I want to personally apologize to Howard and the rest of the league for that mistake. I wish I could go back and fix my mistake so we could have played that series without any distractions I caused. This season has been a little hectic for Spike Island and apart of that problem was me managing and not being home to take full control of everything.   This decision is best for both sides I believe.

Not many know this but after my junior year at VMI, I quit the team at the end of the season because of declining of playing time. I thought about transferring for my senior year and I was about to give up on the game I loved my entire life. Baseball at that time became something I did not enjoy. I came home for the summer to be with family after two seasons of Summer ball out of state. I can honestly say that Spike Island and the CCBL changed my life. As cheesy as it sounds, the last two summers brought the love of baseball back into my life and I’m forever grateful. I ended up falling in love with the game again in the summer of 2014 and decided to go back to VMI not only to finish my baseball career but to also get my Bachelors degree. The CCBL not only allowed me to finish my baseball career at VMI and get closure but also to finish my education, a decision that I would have regretted the rest of my life if I left VMI.

After getting my love for the game back, I decided to start coaching high school baseball after I moved to Virginia. I got a job at Blacksburg as the head coach of the JV team. We finished 17-6 this year and it was better than I even expected. So much so, that I want to continue to coach HS baseball and may even go back to school for sports administration in the future to possibly become a college baseball coach or be an athletic director in the future.

Sorry for the sob story, i just wanted to express my appreciation for the CCBL and explain to you how a county league can truly change someone’s life for the positive. I am forever grateful and the memories I made in only two summers will be some of the best I ever made on the baseball field. The friends I “re-made” after I went to school down south will live on forever after I previously lost touch with everyone when I was in school.

Last thing, I just want to express an idea I have had for awhile. I am only throwing this idea out there because I love the league and I want it to thrive in the future. I would love to see a merger with another league like the Federation League with teams in Clearfield, Dubois, Punxy, etc. I had an idea to make it a 14-team league since both leagues have 7 teams. So CCBL would play each other twice for 12 games during the week only (games only on Tuesday and Thursday) and then play the teams from the Fed league once for seven more games only on the weekend. 19 regular season game schedule and the more travel would be made on Sunday’s with “inter-league games” against the Fed league. The playoffs would be a two sided bracket only playing against your division until the finals. The finals could be a best of three or something at a neutral site such as Medlar Field or something. We could have an all star game, etc. getting the name out there more in newspapers with a recognizable logo and such could increase interest.

All teams in the league would be accessible via interstate 80. Also you could call the league, the Interstate 80 Baseball League and have the I-80 logo be the league logo if you were able to get approval I guess. Just an idea I have! Just wanted to pass it along. Both leagues use wood bats now and basically have the same structure. I think it would definitely be a change but it could help the league thrive and adapt for the future. This whole idea would only change travel for about 3-4 games per season. You would either have three or four away games vs. Fed League teams depending on how the schedule works out where you would have to travel more than normal. I’m only throwing out this idea because I know some teams are struggling with younger players stepping up to take over eventually for older players. I think solving the problem of increasing younger players staying home during the summer to play in the CCBL and not playing travel ball, etc. is adapting and merging to make the stakes higher and increase the interest in the league. Just my two cents.

Thank you again,

Drew Bryan

Another day, another threat of rain. The skies cleared, the air cooled, and the Ducks were still searching for their first win. With long-time veteran Pelka on the mound, the Hawks hoped to intimidate the young Ducks. The Ducks held their own behind starting pitcher Josh Glunt, but in the fourth and fifth innings, the Hawks started to catch up to the rookie pitcher. In the sixth inning, the Ducks committed 3 errors to let the Hawks score 5 to take the win.

As neither team was in a hurry to get the offense started Tuesday evening when the Mounties got rolling it was over just as quick.  Scoreless through 2 Clarence would tack on 6 runs in the 3rd inning collecting just as many hits and sending 10 batters to the plate.  With Justin Koleno efficiently holding down the Peppers that would be all they needed but the Mounties weren’t finished.  Adding 2 more in the 4th from a pair of doubles with Justin Taylor’s plating both of the runs Clarence would try to end the game in the 5th needing only 2 more runs to give them the necessary 10 they would get there with a 2 run double from Chuck Probst but Taylor left the last mark by hitting a 3 run homer to cap his 3 hit/5 RBI evening and ensuring a Mountie victory.  The only thing better than the Mountie bats was the performance on the mound by Koleno who would only face 17 batters and not give up a hit to the Peppers while striking out 4.
