The Spike Island Pirates and the Howard Hawks were finally able to play their make up of a rain out early on in the season as sunny weather was able to dry out the wet field from the heavy rain on Tuesday. The game was a pitcher’s dual between Spike Island’s Parker Watson and Howard’s Tyler Sunday and Brian Pelka. The Pirates finished with only two hits. The Hawks finished with three hits in a losing efforts.

The Hawks were jump started by a two inning scoreless pitching effort by Tyler Sunday, who didn’t give up a hit. Sunday was relieved by Brian Pelka in the third inning. Watson was able to get out of a big jam in the top of the 5th inning was able to get first and third with no outs as Zuback started the inning with a single and moved to third base on a throwing error by Ryan Mostyn at third base. Gettig who reached first base on the error was able to steal second base to make it second and third with no one out. Watson was able to get out of the jam by getting Smith to strike out, Price to line out to center field, and T. Womer to ground out to shortstop.

The Pirates were boosted by center fielder Matt McCamley, who came up with a big two RBI double to right center field in the bottom of the 5th inning that scored Matt Curtis and Robbie Smith. Watson and Pelka battled it out on the mound the rest of the way as Watson was able to shut the Hawks in the last two innings to earn the win.

The Hawks dropped to 6-7 on the season and the Pirates moved to 11-2 on the season and remain in first place with a 2.5 game lead on second place Clarence Mounties. The Pirates host Clarence on Thursday at 6 pm in Philipsburg, while Howard hosts Clarence on Sunday at 2 pm.
