After rain had pummeled most of the region Friday night and early Saturday morning causing field maintenance that needed to be done before playing, the visiting Ducks and Pirates finally played their second contest of the season that needed plenty of diamond dry before first pitch at 2 pm. The dreary day of light rain and overcast didn’t slow down either team as both teams got out of the gates fast.
Lemont got on the scoreboard first off Pirates’ starter Josh Potter in the top of the first inning following a lead-off double by Zach Smeal. Smeal scored on an error by Pirates third baseman Ryan Mostyn. Mostyn later took an infield single by Clint Hicks to the face following a bad hop off of the infield grass which caused a short delay in the action. Mostyn would stay in the rest of the game following the injury. The Pirates looked to respond but did not capitalize with a single by Brandon Quay and double by Drew Bryan in the bottom of the first.
Potter settled in a groove and sat down the Ducks batters in order in the second. The Pirates broke open the game with a five run second inning started by back to back singles by Logan Williamsom and Nate Kerlin. The bases were loaded following an error by the pitcher, Hicks, and three runs would then score on an RBI single by Travis Arnold and 2-RBI single by Robbie Smith. The Pirates would get two more in the inning following a SAC fly by Matt Curtis and an RBI single by Quay.
Potter continued to shut down the Ducks offense the rest of the way through the game, but not before giving up two singles to both Kyler Mellot and Cam Aungst. The Pirates picked up a run each of the last four times at the plate with RBI single by Hayward in the third, an RBI single by AJ Robinson in the fourth, an RBI single by Quay in the fifth, and another RBI single by Hayward in the sixth.
Josh Potter took the win on the mound for Spike Island after throwing a complete game with 11 strikeouts. Clint Hicks took the loss for the Ducks. The Ducks moved to 5-5 on the season and play next on Tuesday at home vs. Spring Mills. The Pirates moved to 7-0 and play today at Spring Mills.
